Vintage farmhouse, industrial modern, or boho chic? There are so many design styles, sometimes it's hard to keep track. So, we've rounded up 21 of our faves to inspire you to try out a new look in your home.
Eclectic
Essentially, eclectic interiors are spaces that combine a variety of styles — traditional, global, modern, the sky’s the limit — mix together all the looks you like best. To rock an eclectic look in this living room, designer Sarah Stacey filled the sunny space with mismatched chairs, a vintage chest and a colorful Moroccan rug as eye-catching artwork. Mismatched modern lamps and a glass-and-chrome coffee table round out the anything-goes look. Each piece is unique but everything works together seamlessly.
Relaxed Modern
If "modern" and "cozy" design got together and had a baby (congrats!) you'd have relaxed modern. Modern spaces can sometimes feel cold and formal, but relaxed modern is warmer and much more accessible. This living room space uses a mix of modern and eclectic pieces to create a more casual, mod vibe. The clean lines of the white sofa, the vintage chair and classic marble table make the space feel much cozier than a typical, classically modern space.
California Cool
Where does that young, hip, up-and-coming Hollywood celeb you have a crush on (but would never admit it) live? Probably in a rad house in the Hollywood Hills, dripping with a California cool vibe. Natural elements, a variety of textures and a cooler color palette are all common in a California-cool style space. The natural wood coffee table, bamboo shades and jute rug in this living room are all inspired by nature. They are accompanied by boho pillows and fab, abstract art above the fireplace. Everything works together to create a space that feels well designed, but also super casual.
Traditional Remixed
Traditional design will never go out of style but that doesn't mean it won't make you want to hit the snooze alarm. While the details and architecture of this Boston home are all very traditional, the owners chose furniture, colors and décor that are anything but. Teal barrel chairs flank the classic fireplace while a trio of metallic gold tables are grouped together in the center of the room. The lavender wall color, and the unique abstract art adds some wonderful bold, pops of color to the space. This room is a masterclass in how you can take all the traditional elements of design, put them all in a blender and end up with something truly fresh and unexpected: traditional remixed.
Safari Chic
This gorgeous outdoor living room might make you feel like you need to book a romantic African safari. The dark wood-paneled ceiling and sophisticated wicker furniture bring a warm contrast to the otherwise neutral space. Lots of plants, comfy pillows, long billowy curtains and worldly, vintage-inspired décor round out the safari chic look. If you can imagine an elephant strolling over for a visit while you lounge on the sofa, you're not the only one.
Coastal Fresh
While the bones of this space definitely have a coastal vibe (hello, shiplap!), the furniture and décor elevate it to a decidedly coastal fresh living room. The ocean art might remind you of the surfing lesson you never ended up taking last summer after all (#oops). But with a vintage settee in a cool velvet blue, simple greenery and plenty of wood accents, the design has elements of traditional coastal design, with some fun, modern twists mixed in.
Neutral Modern
Stark, all-white spaces can sometimes feel like a doctor's office. But this bright white space feels fresh, airy and modern. Abstract art and a few black and dark wood accents help to offset the white color palette with some pops of contrast. And the floor-to-ceiling drapes give the living room a feeling of height and grandeur. However, warning: if you have kids or pets, you probably want to stay far away from the all- white color palette. Very far.
Farmhouse Fresh
Farmhouse is a much-loved design style that's been around for many years now, but it could also use a bit of a makeover. Welcome to the dance floor: farmhouse fresh. This living room has a typical, rustic farmhouse feel, but it also manages to feel fresh, open and modern. Unique vintage décor works well with an unexpected bold abstract painting, and a graphic pattern on the chairs. The brick, wood paneling and hewn beams are a nod to traditional farmhouse, but this space is definitely a cut above.
Art Centric
If you're an art lover and collect pieces you're excited to show off, don't be afraid to make them the focal point of your space. This comfy living room is successfully built around the owner's varied art collection. With the blue velvet pillows and unexpected pink lamp, they took color inspiration from the artwork itself, and used it throughout the space to echo some of the more prominent shades. A neutral, overstuffed sofa and a simple cream rug allow the colorful art pieces to remain front and center.
Pattern on Pattern
Forget matchy/matchy — this space proves you really can mix many different colors and patterns together and still create a look that's chic and purposeful. The cool, blue walls help to ground the space and offset some of the organized chaos of the living room's fabrics. While the textures and patterns themselves vary greatly, the color palette of cream, blue and rusty pink are a common thread that brings it all together. If you love this idea but don't want to make such a bold statement, try simply mixing some patterned pillows on your sofa to create a similar effect.
European Minimalist
If you've always dreamed of having your own stylish Paris apartment, you might dig the European minimalism approach to design. This stunning living room has an intricate ceiling and lovely traditional architectural details. The bare walls echo the minimalist vibe, as well as the limited use of color throughout the room. Just a few key pieces of furniture are needed — a sofa, a lamp, a rug and a coffee table/stool — to pull off a cosmopolitan look like this one.
Girly + Flirty
If you're addicted to Sex & The City reruns and you love the color pink, this girly design style might be right up your alley. With a floral rug, a pink crystal chandelier and a lovely pink toile chair, this room feels flirty and fun. A plush couch and lots of details with soft edges and a feminine vibe, make this living room feel extra girl-y and fabulous. And yes, that's a clothing rack smack in the middle of your living room because a wardrobe like yours shouldn't be hidden away in a closet.
Very Vintage
This living room is a stylish, successful mix of a variety of vintage pieces and styles. A midcentury modern table and light fixture mix seamlessly with an Asian-style chest, a vintage, wicker Porter's chair, and a fresh, modern wallpaper. A pop of yellow is perfectly offset by the otherwise mostly black-and-white color palette. A few modern pieces are mixed in, like the brass side table and contemporary sofa, so the space doesn't feel too kitschy.
Scandinavian Luxe
Scandi spaces can sometimes feel spare and unfussy, but this space goes in the opposite direction. This comfy, warm living room has a quiet color palette but also sticks to a sophisticated Scandinavian-inspired design. The exposed wood beams and wood details on the upholstered furniture bring a luxe, rustic charm to the space. The trio of metal light fixtures offers a nice contrast to the lighter color palette while the super high ceilings make the living room feel super open and airy.
Urban Loft
If city living is your jam, then you might just be an urban loft lover. Unique modern elements and an open floorplan help to pull off this urban loft style living room. Taking advantage of the super high ceiling, a large, statement chandelier mixed with unique wall sconces set the tone in the space. Sleek sculptural pieces of furniture and a simple color scheme complete this stylish, updated urban loft living room.
Midcentury Modern Granny
"The Jetsons" meet granny chic in this mod, vintage-inspired living room space. This room is proof that opposites attract. Some fun, midcentury modern elements, like groovy orange chairs, are paired with a home-spun granny chic vibe. A feminine patterned wallpaper and a braided rug pair with some cozy, granny-inspired throw pillows and textiles to soften the space.
Library Chic
Built around stylish, wall-to-wall bookshelves, this space is the definition of library chic. If you happen to have a giant book collection and a big enough space, you can build all the design elements of the room around your books. The industrial concrete ceiling, simple sectional sofa and dark color palette allow the true stars of the large living room to remain front and center: hundreds of new and vintage books.
Masculine Muted
This warm, woody space has a decidedly dude vibe, and we love it from top to bottom. With a muted color palette, low profile furniture and bold artwork, this living room is simple, modern and cool. Notice that there also isn't a ton of symmetry in the space: the chair is angled in to the room and the TV is off center, but the casual layout of the space works really well with this 'unplugged' design style.
Gallery Maximalist
Truth time: You will forever love big, bold gallery walls and you don't care who knows it. This space has a spectacular gallery wall as the focal point of the living room that's paired with a vibe that's definitely eclectic. With a variety of different styles and types of chairs flanking the coffee table, as well as an interesting mix of décor, the space is a maximalist showstopper. The art goes all the way up the wall, bringing your eyes upward and making the space look much larger than it actually is.
Coastal Mod
For those of us who don't have a beach house (yet!), coastal-style spaces represent a design trend that's always likely to get lots of love. But you might not be ready to go all in on the coastal vibe just yet. In that case, you should think about giving coastal mod a try. Light wood, sea-inspired décor and a clean, fresh color palette make this living room feel coastal while modern touches such as the leopard print pillows and the clean black fireplace elevate the design.
Whimsical
If you're always marching to the beat of your own drum and like to push the boundaries, you might want to create a whimsical space like this in your home. The owners added a sculptural wooden tree that fans out across the wall and ceiling of their light, bright living room. The unique accent stylishly blends indoors with outdoors and lends the space a fairytale feel.
